This small family-run estate was founded in 1958 by grandfather Paul Mittnacht, who passed down his savoir-faire to his two sons, André and Louis. Since 1995, however, it has been their sons, Marc and Christophe respectively, who have shaped the company to rank alongside Alsace’s most illustrious names. These days, the estate encompasses 23 hectares across Hunawihr, Ribeauvillé, and Mittelwihr in the Alsace Moselle appellation of north-eastern France.

Born of a desire to produce wines as close to their natural state as possible, Marc and Christophe employ biodynamic and organic practices, and have been certified since 1999. This was one of the earliest certifications in all of Alsace, with Domaine Mittnacht Frères paving the way for other vignerons to follow.

Their farming philosophy sees the vineyard void of synthetic additives, with grapes harvested and sorted by hand. The wine is made with a minimum of interventions in mind, with only a small dose of sulfur added—to better respect the grapes and their terroir, harnessing the land’s expression in each wine.

The complex geological region results in small, concentrated yields (the area receives less than 500mm of rain per year). And this paired with skilled, precise handiwork, the winery continues to bring about impeccable quality and finesse with each new vintage. These esteemed vignerons produce the likes of pinot gris, pinot blanc, gewurztraminer, pinot noir, and, of course, rieslings that champion the vivid acidity and minerality of the region.

Julien Albertus farms 16 biodynamic hectares spread out on 70 small parcels around the area of Rosheim, northern Alsace. This domain was founded by Sophie and Philippe in 1990 and they have worked organic since the start. The name is a combination of the two areas which they have land at: Kumpf Molsheim and Meyer Rosenwiller. In 2010 when Phillippe left the domain, Julien replaced him and brought new energy and ideas. He started to work biodynamic in the vineyards, for him it’s the best way to work if you want to express the full potential of each terroir.

Julien loves drinking wine and since 2012 he has been making the ’Restons Nature’, unfiltered wines without any addition of sulfur. His other wines undergo a very light filtration and he adds a little sulfur during the bottling. This passionate winemaker listens to his wines and lets them take the time they need for aging and developing, all depending on vintage and terroir.

Norbert and Marie-Geneviève Molozay discovered Château de Vaux in 1999, and set about replanting and extending the vineyard using biodynamic farming practices. Now sprawling 14.5 hectares of diverse soils, the vineyards reside among the hills of Vaux, Jussy, Lessy, and Vic-sur-Seille in the complex Moselle region of northeast France.

Norbert has spent many years working in vineyards around the globe, including New Zealand, Australia, and the United States, along with the French wine regions of Burgundy, Beaujolais, Alsace, and Languedoc. Marie-Geneviéve is among the fifth-generation of a family of wine merchants from Metz. She first studied oenology in Dijon, before training as a sommelier at the Université du Vin de Suze-la-Rousse in the Drôme region.

Together, they have applied their scientific knowledge and hands-on experience to produce a manifold collection of wines that capture the terroir of their region, distinct from neighbouring Alsace.

Moselle was once a prominent wine region, but having been affected by phylloxera and the first world war, its vineyards were reduced to a mere 10 hectares by 1985, and the savoir-faire of viticulture suited to this geologically complex topography was lost. And so contemporary winemakers like this husband-and-wife team have leaned towards the experimental to craft an exceptional unique expression.
